An End to Secret Deals by Local 251
Strong contracts or secret back-room deals? That is one of the key choices that members face in the Local 251 election.
Local 251 officials Joe Bairos and Kevin Reddy have signed a series of secret deals with employers that hurt working Teamsters.
251 United Action has a proven record of bringing these secret deals to light. As the elected leaders of Local 251, we will end secret backroom deals once and for all. Elected members will serve on every contract negotiating team. And all contract agreements will be put to a vote of the members.
Secret Deals Negotiated by Local 251 Officials
Rhode Island Hospital Contract Negotiated in Secret
The last contract at Rhode Island Hospital was negotiated early behind the backs of the members. The 2,500 members at the hospital did not even know the contract was being negotiated until Human Resources announced there was a new contract! Members learned there was a new contract from management, not the union!
Secret Deal Gives 251 Teamsters Less Rights Than Nonunion Employees at Rhode Island Hospital
Local 251 signed an agreement with Lifespan that gives management the right to block Teamsters from working in the same cost center as a family member. This side agreement gives Teamsters weaker rights than any other employees at Lifespan. Lifespan's Corporate Policy allows family members to work together as long as they are not under the direct supervision of a family member.
Management even has a video promoting the hospital as a place family members work together! Watch the video here. UNAP members can work alongside their family. Nonunion workers can too! Only Teamsters are denied the right to work in a department because a family member works there. Why would Local 251 do this to us?
Secret Deals to Give Jobs to Friends of Kevin Reddy
Have you ever wondered why job openings are posted as 'Temporary Jobs' that require you to sign away your seniority rights to take the job (which no one in their right mind would accept)? Then this same job becomes permanent months later and is awarded to an outside temporary employee. Well, that's because Kevin Reddy signed this secret "side letter" that gives the Hospital the right to do this. Of course it's just a coincidence that the outside hires are friends of Kevin's. Read the secret deal.
Secret Deal Weakens Overtime Rights
Another secret agreement weakens our overtime rights. Under this deal, Teamsters are put on the same playing field as temporary employees when it comes to the opportunity to work overtime. Not only is management refusing to run an overtime wheel in some departments, but temporary employees, even nonunion temps, are getting overtime ahead of Teamster members. Members were never even told about this agreement, let alone asked our opinion or given a vote.
Secret Deal by Bairos Undercuts Teamster Contract
Bairos signed a backroom deal with Jack Cooper Transport that undercuts one of the best Teamster contracts in the country. Under the contract, truck drivers who transport cars (called "carhaulers") are paid $5/hour less into their pension than carhaulers under the national Teamster contract.
The Teamsters who work under this contract live and work in the Midwest, more than a thousand miles from Providence. In fact, Local 251 does not represent a single carhauler in Rhode Island. Bairos signed the contract covering carhaulers in the Midwest as a favor to his pal Paul Houck, a former Teamster official who turned against the union and went to work for management. Cutting deals to help management instead of standing up for union members here in Providence: this is exactly why Local 251 members are organizing for change with 251 United Action.
